De Sousa Cellars
John De Sousa Jr., owner of De Sousa
Cellars, represents the family’s third generation of
winemakers. With a string of successful businesses
under his belt, John’s father, John Sr., founded the
family winery in Beamsville in 1990. This fulfilled
a lifelong dream to follow in the winemaking
footsteps of his own father who had made and
sold wine in his homeland of Portugal. De Sousa
Cellars’ Portuguese roots run deep and the winery
has won many fans for its mixture of European
traditions and New World innovations.
John Jr. always worked closely with his father in
the vineyards and the cellars. Sadly, in 1997
his father passed away but De Sousa was
ready to expand his father’s legacy. He
opened a second winery in the heart of
Toronto in 1998 and brought rising star
winemaker Andrzej (Andre) Lipinski on
board in 2001. With De Sousa’s guidance,
Lipinski developed the winery’s
premium ‘Reserve’ line. An artist and true
perfectionist, Lipinski’s wines are consistently
recognized for their exceptional quality.
VINTAGES is proud to present four charming
wines from this winery on the rise, including
three from Lipinski’s ‘Reserve’ portfolio. The
refreshing, fruity Riesling ‘Semi Dry’ 2005; the
rich, well-balanced Chardonnay Reserve 2004; the
fresh, spicy Cabernet Franc Reserve 2004; and the
cherry-packed Merlot Reserve 2003 are all wellmade
and show off the considerable talents at
work at De Sousa Cellars.
